Instead, it sees a single encrypted connection to the VPN server. However, the VPN provider now sits in that position and can technically observe the same traffic your ISP used to. You are not removing the observer; you are choosing a different one.

What your ISP sees without a VPN

Without a VPN, your ISP routes every request you make and can log a surprising amount. Even though most sites now use HTTPS, which hides the specific page and its contents, your provider still sees the domain name you connect to through DNS lookups and the TLS 'SNI' field. It also sees connection timing, data volumes, and which server addresses you talk to.

That makes the provider's honesty and logging policy the whole ballgame. A VPN that quietly records your activity is arguably worse than your ISP, since you are paying it specifically for privacy.
